Ok... so she wasn't much of a morning person despite her naturally bubbly nature. And the fact that she was still in the process of unpacking her entire life into the new place wasn't helping matters. Simply put, Mikeala was zonked. On top of everything, she couldn't find her coffee filters, or her coffee for that matter, and that was just all bad. So, Kay decided to brave the morning and head out in search of some sort of coffee shop or corner store that had a perking coffee machine. It was sort of early, by Kay's standards, mid-morning by everyone else's. Still, the small town seemed fairly quiet for 11: a.m. Not that Kay was expecting some sort of bustling city action, but she thought it might be just a bit too quiet for her taste. Time would tell, maybe everyone was having an off morning.
Kay wandered the town happily enough, not really knowing where she was going and enjoying the mini exploration she was having. Finally the tantalizing scent of freshly perked coffee reached her nose and she sighed deeply. "Heaven on earth," she mumbled to herself, still feeling pretty drowsy. Kay looked at the sign on the store. Two Little Birds. It was kinda cute. She would have spent more time simply admiring the quaint little coffee/book shop if she hadn't caught another whiff of the tempting, warm, caffeinated liquids within. With a contented sigh, she opened the door and allowed her senses to be barraged as she stepped inside.
Since it was fairly quiet, Kay went straight up to the counter to order her coffee. Nothing fancy, nothing exotic, just a simple cup of joe. What ever they had brewing suited Kay just fine, she was no coffee connoisseur by any means. Just pour it, drip a little milk in and throw in two sugar and she was all set. After paying for the wonderful concoction, Kay picked up a napkin and a horse magazine to browse before settling herself into a booth by the door. It was such a cozy little spot, and Kay could see herself becoming a regular.
Settling herself down, Kay stole a quick glance around. There were a few other people around, but still being so new to town she was a little uncertain about approaching people. She wasn't sure how the locals would react to such an obvious outsider as herself. Time would tell...

She’d been awake and searching the town since seven that morning. Melanie was a morning person... a night person... heck, she was an ‘all the time’ person. Whenever she woke up, she was awake... at night, she was awake until she decided to go to bed, then she zonked. She wasn’t ADD or ADHD, she was just ‘Mel’... and Mel was a bit of an odd one. For a seventeen year old, she knew how to be mature, and could be mature, but she’d rather have fun and acted like it. She was friendly to the core and could make friends with the most unlikely people.
Honestly, she was bored. Bouncy, but bored. She needed, no, she wanted more friends that the ones she already had. Melanie had left her reddish brown hair down this morning, holding it back with a white headband. In her double pierced ears she wore small silver studs and dangly horse earrings. Her upper body was clothed in a tight short sleeved blue short with a slightly longer, darker blue long sleeved button-down shirt that was open and the sleeves rolled up to her elbows. Her jeans were white and had many pockets, though they were along the tighter side and she wore a black, blue, and white belt, though she didn’t need it. On her feet she wore a pair of very nice black, blue, and white skate shoes that she’d bought earlier just because she had seen them and felt the impulse to get them.
Mel had accessorized a bit more than normal. She wasn’t planning on going to the stable today... she was just hanging around town. She wore a silver bracelet that had different colored stones set all around it and three necklaces; a large peace symbol on a relatively thick silver chain, a silver identity necklace that spelled out her name, and thin silver chain that had a medium sized heart hanging off it. Her eyes were also outlined in a bit of black eyeliner and mascara and dark brown eyeshadow, bringing out their pale blue/grey color.
The seventeen year old had been browsing the shelves of the bookstore, looking for a good read, when she heard the sound of the bell signifying that someone else had entered the nice little shop. She poked her head out from between the bookshelves and watched as the girl ordered a cup of coffee and picked up a magazine before sitting down, alone.
Melanie cocked her head to the side curiously as she watched the girl for a few more minutes before making up her mind. She left the books and made her way slowly towards the counter, where she asked for a simple cup of water; she wasn’t in the mood for coffee, not even black coffee, which was the type she liked best. After getting her water and passing over a few quarters, the five foot four inch teenager skirted her way around the other patrons towards the booth that the other girl had taken a seat at. As Mel approached, she could tell that the female sitting at the booth was much taller and a few years older than she was.
That didn’t deter her, though, and Mel stepped right up to the booth, a smile on her face. “Hey, is this seat taken, reserved, or anything?” She asked, motioning to the other empty chair.[/blockquote] Muse: Good Notes: Fun to write

Kay flipped through the magazine, mostly looking at the pictures and skimming anything that looked totally, amazingly interesting. Reading the magazine didn't serve much purpose other than to make her look occupied and make her miss her own horse. All her gear was still packed away waiting patiently until she managed to find a place to board Silver and have him shipped up from her grandmother's little farm. It had been so weird the last couple of days, Kay had woken up early to get a little more unpacking done in place of her farm chores. Funny as it sounds, she almost missed getting up super early to feed, water, and turn out horses and cattle before cleaning stalls. Kay thought it was pretty funny that she missed the chores, since when she was getting up and doing them she would have given almost anything not to have to. That's just the way things are, she surmised.
Sipping slowly at her coffee, Kay felt herself perk up little by little. She knew it was mostly a psychological thing, but she could still feel herself waking up the more coffee she ingested. Who cared that the coffee was only a psychological help so long as it worked. And it was a tasty help too. As she sat and stared blankly at the magazine on the table before her, Kay found herself playing absently with her hair. She wound a few strands around and through her fingers before letting it fall softly back into place then repeating the whole process over again. She continued this little process for a good minute before stopping herself from creating a huge tangled mess on top of her head. To resist the temptation, Kay used one of the three black elastics she always wore around her wrist to throw her long, blonde hair up into a quick, messy chignon. Once her hair was no longer a factor, Kay's fingers itched to start fidgeting and fiddling with something else, and settled for the sterling silver Celtic knot amulet with an amber stone in the center on a leather cord that her brother had given to her on her eighteenth birthday. The amulet and the elastics were generally the only "jewelry" Kay wore. She tended to dress as if she was about to walk into a barn, even if she wasn't. She owned a lot of denim.
Footsteps caused Kay to glance up briefly to a shorter girl with reddish-brown leaving the book section of the store. Kay didn't really pay attention, thinking the other girl was simply leaving, until the footsteps stopped. Kay glanced up just as the girl began to speak, asking if the other chair in the booth was empty. A smile broke out on her face immediately. Awesome! Someone openly friendly! "Not at all," Kay said, closing the magazine. "Have a seat. I'm Mikeala, but everyone just calls me Kay."

“Thanks!” She set her water down before sliding into the booth opposite of Kay, picking up the glass and sipping at the cold, tasteless liquid before speaking again. “I’m Mel... err, Melanie, but I go by Mel more often than anything.” Mel’s smile toned down to a grin and she glanced at the magazine that Kay had closed. “Oh, I haven’t read that one yet... is there anything interesting in it?” She questioned, motioning to the mag.
Melanie’s eyes glanced around the shop before landing back n the table, or, more specifically, her water. She wondered if her uncle had figured to ask her aunt where she’d gone yet... Only Melanie and her aunt had been awake when the teenager had left the house. With the way her uncle was protective, Mel knew that she’d have to answer all of his questions whenever she went home... she probably should have waited for him to wake up, but Mel hadn’t wanted to waste half of her day. Her uncle was a late sleeper when he didn’t have to work.
“Have you lived here all your life, Kay?” Melanie found herself asking, not liking very long silences, no matter how comfortable they were. “I moved in with my aunt and uncle a bit ago. Surprisingly, I think I’m adapting pretty well. At least there’s a stable here. I don’t think I could have stood it if there wasn’t. Do you like it here?” All of this was said in one breath. Mel paused to drink some more of her water and waited for Kay’s reply. She played with her necklaces, straightening them out, before pulling her headband forwards when it slid back too far. Kay grinned as the other girl sat down and introduced herself. Mel. She'd have to remember that. Kay was admittedly kinda bad with names. Faces were no problem, but names somehow always managed to elude her for some reason. She'd have to find some way to remember the name Mel. Repeating it silently to herself, Kay let her hair down to run her fingers through it a couple times before throwing it back up into a loose ponytail.
When Mel motioned to the magazine and asked about it, Kay slid it across the table. "To be honest, I only skimmed through it," she admitted with a giggle. "My brain objects to actually taking in information before the first coffee of the day! But, I did see a nice article on how to avoid and treat thrush in damp areas. I'll have to try and force myself to remember some of the tips. My gelding is pretty prone to getting thrush." Kay already had spray bottles of diluted bleach at home, waiting for Silver to be delivered, and she had left a few back home in case he got any while she was gone. It was the only thing she'd found worked consistently, but maybe some of the new tips she'd read would help.
Taking a longer drink of her coffee now that it was cooling off, Kay sighed softly. She missed her brother and her grandmother and her horse. She hated moving and change, but knew that it was a necessary part of life. Kay just wished it was a necessary part of life that was done and over with quicker.
Pulling herself back to the conversation at hand, Kay almost laughed when Mel asked if she'd lived here all her life. Now there's some irony for ya! "No, I actually just moved here the other day," Kay said, "I grew up in Canada, then spent a few years with my grandmother before coming here. I've only been here a few days, but I already love it so much! And I know how you feel about the stable! I'd die if i thought I couldn't bring Silver with me! Do you have your own horse? Maybe we could go riding together after my grandmother sends Silver down!"
