little miss S C A R L E T
Scarlet had just arrived to the small town of Guineaville just two days ago. Not much had happened since she had gotten here. She had brought Chimera to Riverglass and got her settled down then went off to find herself an apartment. Which she should have done before she had arrived, but Scarlet likes to procrastinate. She had brought along her dog to Guineaville too. Izzy, was a small jack russel terrier puppy which she had just gotten recently for her birthday. Actually it had been a birthday present to herself. She had really wanted a dog.
When Scarlet arrived at the barn she immediately made her way to the tack room to get all her gear. As she walked back down the isle way, with Izzy on her heels, she could hear Chimera nickering to her and turning around in circles in her stall. As Scarlet set all her tack down and began to open the stall door she spoke, Hey, big sister, and rubbed the mare's forehead. After snatching the halter next to the door and putting it on Chimera's head, Scarlet led her out and put her in the cross ties. Scarlet quickly knocked-off the mare and tacked her up in her favorite saddle and bridle. Before unhooking the mare from the cross ties, Scarlet put Izzy (and a big bowl of cold water) into Chimera's stall. She didn't want the pup following after them and spooking the mare. After checking the girth, Scarlet, led her mare out of the barn and next to a fence just so that she could get on. Chimera was very big.
Today wasn't really a schooling day for the pair. Scarlet had just wanted the mare to get used to her new home. After aimlessly wandering around the farm, Scarlet then saw a big opening in the forest and then remembered what the owner of Riverglass had told her a couple of days ago on the phone. Melena, if Scarlet remembered correctly, had said that they had wonderful trails that seemed almost endless. Scarlet smiled a little, and nudged that mare into a trot for the first time as they headed toward the forest.
When the two were under the shade of the trees, Chimera stopped immediately. Her ears pricked forward and was looking around as if there was a serial killer on the loose. Scarlet patted the mare on the shoulder and pushed her on. C'mon, big girl. Nothing to worry about here. As they continued deeper in on the trails, Chimera never became fully relaxed but she seemed pleased enough.

M E L E N A she is the saint of all the sinners ! "Mar-eeee, Mary, Mary, Mary Looo. Mare-eee Looo, Very Merry Maryy." The song had only came out in an absent-minded melody, but it seemed to help Mary be slightly calmer as they navigated through the trails. It didn't cure all of her fear, though; she still kept stopping suddenly and looking around ("checking for monsters," as Melena said), and then she would start trotting in an urgent manner, as if she had actually seen something.
Now, if this had been Bow, Melena would actually most likely be scared, because she put her trust in horses, and she believed them if she showed they thought something was wrong. She was a good listener like that. But it was different with Mary; Melena knew that the horse was just afraid of everything. There really wasn't anything to be concerned about there.
So she just weaved through the trails, stopping occasionally to let Mary relax a bit more, and she seemed to be getting a little bit more comfortable. That was good; maybe next time would be even easier.
They hadn't cantered at all yet today, but maybe if she continued to become more comfortable in the new environment, Melena thought, she'd try to pick up the pace a bit. She knew the perfect place they could do that, since she had just recently found a small patch of field, perfect for pretending there was an arena, that broke away from the trails a few minutes north. The idea made her smile until Mary picked up another trot that made Melena think of the words "run away."
Another stop was taken after Melena managed to cool Mary down again, and she reached to pat the mare's neck, cooing kind words of reassurance. But then she straightened back up once noticing Janey seemed to be even more afraid than she had been when they first went out.
"What's wrong, Mary?" Melena asked, as if the horse would turn around and tell her in plain English what she saw or heard. But now Mary was breathing quickly through her nose, her nostrils flaring. Her legs twitched, and then she quickly backed up. Melena kicked her forward again. "Quit it! What is wrong with you?" Her tone was both worried and confused. Again, she reached down to pat her neck, but she saw a flicker of motion up ahead and adjusted her seat, then craned her neck to see who it was.
A coyote? A bear? A man-eating bear? A hungry man eating bear? Oh, no. It was just a horse. But boy, it was a big horse! Melena tried to see who road on top of the equine, but she couldn't see the face clearly yet.
Mary pawed the ground, then turned to look at Melena, her eyes questioning, but the question seemed to be, "CAN WE PLEASE RUN NOW?" Melena smiled and shook her head, then tried to be as relaxed as possible so Mary would do the same. It seemed to work a small bit, because Mary hesitantly agreed to step forward to investigate. She was very slow though, and Melena felt like just getting off and leading her.
"You're fine, Mary Lou," she whispered, almost commandingly, and hoped the mare wouldn't freak out on her while she tried to talk to this girl. Who was it again? She squinted and tried to see, since they were closer now, but then gave up, put on a good, happy, ranch-owner face, and reached her hand up to wave. "Hey there!" she called out, and then put her reins back into both hands and waited for a reply.
