- - - - - - - - - MELENA ESTRELLA !? - - - - - - - - -
The day had come earlier and gone in a quick, work-filled blur. Melena had ridden all of her horses today, though not as long as she'd like to (which would make it impossible for all of them to get worked). Her face was red from the heat outside, and her hair was frizzy, knotted, and being held back with a rubber band she'd found on the floor in the stable hallway. The girl was tired, yet she didn't feel like going home and hitting the hay early.
So she wandered into the lounge, her second home, and plopped onto the soft couch -- a very soft couch, thanks to the fact that she'd picked it out when the place was furnished. Sinking back, she stared out into the arena. Sadly, it was empty, so she found herself looking over to the other window, the window that usually let in the light of the sun, and even if it didn't, it gave a wonderful view of the green fields that spread out next to Riverglass Ranch. The sky was a pretty pink-orange color thanks to the sunset. She would go and lay down outside, watch the sky as she sometimes liked to, but her muscles begged her to stay put.
She had to get home, she thought after a few minutes of simply laying down. She had to feed the kitty. No one was even here, she thought. Or, at least, no one had been in the stables at the exact moment she'd unsaddled Bow, the last horse she'd ridden. But her whole self ached from the day's work; she didn't want to get up. Maybe a short nap would give her energy... no, no nap! She took extra care to make sure her eyes stayed open, then sighed and straightened up.

It was all so new, but felt so familiar. The sound of horses shifting in their stalls, the smell of hay and even the manure, the natural heat emitted from the bodies of multiple equines. Taking a deep breath in, Mikeala Burroughs stepped into what she hoped would become her home away from home. This was her first time off on her own and Kay thought the best thing to do would be to find a home for Silver.
Quicksilver was her new horse that her grandmother had lovingly bought for her. Before she moved, Kay had spent 3 months getting to know Silver and they were beginning to work as a team. Now, once she herself was settled, it was time to find a home for her special boy so he could be shipped down. Even though it had only been a week and a half, Kay missed riding like crazy. She desperately hoped that there were openings at Riverglass Ranch for Silver.
After taking a quick peek down the alleys at some of the current equine residents that were still inside, Kay decided to try and look for an office or place of meeting of some sort. She wandered a little randomly, but eventually found the arena. Not quite what she was looking for, but it did allow her to see the windows. Through the windows she saw someone sitting in a lounge-y type room. Kay decided that would be the best place to start, so she headed off in that general direction.
Finally finding a door to the lounge, Kay knocked gently on the door before entering. It looked like a public place, but she figured it was safest to knock first. She shot a quick smile at the girl she had seen through the window and gave her a small wave. "Hi," she said, quickly throwing her hair into a ponytail. "I'm Mikeala. Do you know where I could find the owner or manager or whoever I'm supposed to talk to about boarding a horse here?" Yeah, she talked and just sort of blurted out the first thing in her head, but it wasn't being ignorant or anything. It was just Kay. She was friendly and liked to talk to anyone about anything.

Melena * After rubbing her eyes, Melena got up and wandered to the mini-fridge that the lounge sported. She rummaged through it until her hands started to freeze, then she settled on an orange Gatorade. Unscrewing it quickly, she took a sip and then sat back down on one of the harder chairs.
A movement caught her eye, and she looked over to the indoor arena. Was someone starting to ride? That'd be a good excuse to stay; she cold watch, maybe give them a lesson if they were new. But no, it was just a human.
Melena watched as the girl came in the arena, looking sort of confused, and she wondered who she was. It bothered her that she couldn't memorize the names of every single person who walked into the stables. Taking another sip of the orange liquid, she watched as the girl left. Hm. Odd. She looked like she'd seen Melena, though, so Melena looked over to the door, wondering if she was going to come in.
Sure enough, a knock sounded on the door, and Melena began to call out that whoever it was could come in, but then the door was open and there was no need to do such a thing. Setting the bottle of Gatorade down on a table, she put on her best friendly-owner smile. "Hello!" She slipped the word in quickly before the long question poured out, then listened patiently.
Oh! Melena laughed, though not in an obnoxious sort of way. It was just funny; this girl was obviously expecting some old, perhaps more serious-looking person to talk to. Melena was only in jeans and a bright t-shirt, as usual. She didn't even have her boots on anymore. But it was funny nonetheless. "That would be me; I'm the owner. Nice to meet you! My name's Melena Redd." She stretched out her hand to shake, an honestly happy smile on her face. She was glad to have someone to talk to.

Kay’s face lit up when the girl she had just unleashed her flood of a question at laughed and said that it was her she should be talking to. What an awesome coincidence. Truth be told, Kay had been expecting someone a bit older, perhaps a bit more mature-looking to be in charge of the place. But, hey, the horses around the place looked well-cared for and happy, the barn itself was pretty tidy and well-kept. Who cared if the girl standing before her wasn’t society’s view of a “responsible barn owner”?! So long as she knew what needed to be done and made sure it got done, power to her!
Kay happily reached out and shook hands with the girl, Melena. “Hi, Melena! It’s so nice to meet you! My name’s Mikaela, but everyone just calls me Kay!” she bubbled. “I think it’s so great that you own this place! I mean, way to totally take the traditional barn owner image and throw it out the window!” Kay said all this with a smile. She was happy to find someone here to talk to, especially someone who seemed not to mind her bubbly, cheerful manner. Some people thought she came on a little too strong and was a little too energetic, but that was just the way she was. Kay laughed softly and shrugged semi-apologetically. “Sorry, I know I talk a lot!” she admitted.
Kay took a moment to look around the room. It was a nice-looking place. She really like the window feature, how it looked out over the arena so people could watch lessons in comfort. It wasn’t something she had ever seen before, and thought that it should be something that every barn had. It would save so many frozen fingers and toes while watching winter lessons.
Realizing she was starting to zone out a bit, Kay quickly turned her attention back to Melena. “Anyway, like I said, I’m looking to board my horse here. If you have any openings that is,” she said.

Melena * Melena brightened at the girl's obvious acceptance of her appearance. She'd never really been scared that someone would judge her to the point that they wouldn't board their horses at her stables, but she hadn't dealt with all that many people face-to-face when it came to discussing boarding, either. This girl was pretty young looking, too, though, and quite friendly acting, so it was all good.
"M'kay, Kay," Melena grinned. Despite the fact she wasn't always exactly Mrs. Brightside, she actually loved the kind of people with bubbly personalities. They were always upbeat, never seeming to mind when she felt like complaining and ranting. They balanced each other out on those days. And then when Melena herself was feeling bubbly, happy, and hyper, they could always share their joyful mood and do something fun. She always tried to be friend with people like that, enjoyed it most.
Breaking away from the chain of thoughts and simply deciding that she liked this girl, she smiled at the words that poured again, taking it all as a compliment. “I think it’s so great that you own this place! I mean, way to totally take the traditional barn owner image and throw it out the window!” Melena's grin widened, and then she laughed again. "Well, thank you! I do try to be different." After hearing the short apology, she rolled her eyes, but just in a playful sort of way. "I don't mind it. I actually like people that talk."
Then she noticed Mikaela start to think about something, and Melena used the opportunity to let her own thoughts escape, though none of it was concentrated; they just wandered wherever they pleased as thoughts just sometimes do. Things were going quite well, she thought to herself, but then couldn't help thinking of the phrase "the calm before the storm." She hoped that wasn't the case.
Resurfacing into the world of conversation just as Mikaela did, Melena blink-nodded, collecting herself again. "We've pretty much just opened, so yes, there are plenty spaces available." Her face, which had relaxed for a moment, turned back up into a delighted smile. Every single person who decided to join Riverglass Ranch brought her joy. "What kind of horse is she? Er, it."

Kay hoped she wasn't talking too much for Melena. She had a strong personality, and a very chatty one. It tended to be too much for a lot of people, and Kay really hoped that wasn't the case. Someone like Melena who clearly didn't give a rat's ass about how society saw her was just Kay's cup of tea, so to speak. She could see herself really liking this girl. Maybe once Silver was down, if Melena wasn't too busy, they could go for a ride together or something! That'd be cool!
Kay loved the way Melena's face lit up when she spoke about throwing tradition out the window. And Melena's comment about trying to be different actually made Kay laugh. Not many people said stuff like that anymore, which was too bad. "Hah! Me too! What's more boring than a whole bunch of people who all act and look the same anyway!" she said with a laugh. "And I'm glad you like talkers, because, boy, can I talk! My grandmother said I would never learn to appreciate a good silence. And I know I talk too much for some people, but hey! That's just how I am!"
Kay listened excitedly for Melena's reply about boarding. She loved this place already and thought it would be a great place to bring Silver. Ooooh! She hoped there were still openings to be had! Kay was so excited when Melena said that there were, that she almost jumped for joy. She settled instead for a, go figure, vocal expression. "Ooooh! Yay!" she said happily, a huge grin almost threatening to split her face. "Silver's a Thoroughbred gelding. He was going to be a racer, but he doesn't like being too close to other horses. So he was sold to a barn and trained as a jumper. His full name is Quicksilver. He's such a doll!"

Melena * The energy that flowed freely from this girl was almost comical, but somehow Melena didn't mind it. In fact, she fed off of the happiness from Kay, shared it. Everything seemed a bit more exciting and interesting; Melena forgot about being tired. Sometimes it was so amazing how a single cheery person could change the mood of an entire room, even if only one other person was in it.
Listening to Kay's reply, which was considerably longer than hers, Melena continued smiling and nodded. A picture from A Wrinkle in Time came to mind: a planet full of identical people, all on the same schedule and doing the same thing. A boy bounces his ball out of rhythm and is whisked inside so no one notices.
Yes, that was one of Melena's biggest fears for Earth, so she tried not to follow the crowd as much as she could. You'd think that wouldn't be the case, since she was spoiled and given everything she wanted and such as a kid, but she turned out acting differently anyways. "I know, right?" she grinned, forgetting about the dull picture from the book.
Kay spoke again, and Melena wondered what would happen if there were two Kays and they were locked in a room together. They might talk each other to death. Melena laughed again at this, luckily with appropriate timing since what Kay had said was sort of funny, too. "That's fine with me," she added after a moment with a smile, not sure how else to comment on the rambling. She didn't think Kay needed help with carrying on conversation, anyways.
A sudden outburst of more excitement followed Melena's invitation of sorts, and she watched with amusement, wondering if there was anyone out there that could resist such pure joy. Not many people acted like that once receiving such simple news. It made Melena feel like she should act happy more often.
"Oo, I like his name. He sounds nice," Melena replied after hearing about the horse. "I have a few horses. I think River is my favorite; she's a really nice Arabian. Smart and gentle, but she can be a bitch when necessary, too." The last comment made herself laugh a bit, but it was true.
She didn't usually talk about her horses one at a time for some reason, because she didn't want one to be more important in her mind; she wanted to be fair. But River just clicked with her best, and Mikaela had talked so much, Melena felt the need to do a bit more talking herself.
After just brushing the subject of horses, an idea popped into Melena's head, and she thought for a moment, then straightened up, her grin reappearing. "When Silver comes, we can go riding," Melena suggested. The weather was suppose to stay nice for awhile; at least, she thought it was. And she always loved a good trail ride.
