Full Name:
Joseph Michael Scheridan
Age:
17
Gender:
Male
Riding Level:
Intermediate
Appearance:
He's not too short, not too tall, and looks a bit young for his age, which gets him pretty frustrated; he's unaware that it makes him look cute to the girls. Joey has never had the lean build of a runner, but years of waking up every other morning to do a lap around the local park before school have kept him wiry enough to be moderately athletic. He's never been to a gym and missed the whole bodybuilding obsession, which shows, but likes to think he looks good enough with his shirt off (in truth, he's a bit too skinny, as his lady friends would testify). Still, he's inherited his father and mother's looks, as his twin sister back home has, though they're not identical anymore. He's definitely not a heartthrob, and has never been called anything close to 'hot' in his life, but anyone who looks closer will like that face.
He's always in jeans, and most of his t-shirts have tongue-in-cheek offending slogans on them, but cleans up well enough when you can get him to do so. Being the average boy, he doesn't like shopping and will often wear the same clothes for a year before possessing any urge to go out and get more; his high-tops have lasted him since freshman year high school. Joey's black hair is cut short enough to be manageable, but he rarely runs a comb through it, so it's usually messy and a bit dirty. His blue-gray eyes are very expressive, giving away any secrets he might try to keep, and he's almost always smiling.
General Personality:
Fun-loving, outgoing, and a bit too mischievous for his teachers' liking, Joey has always been optimistic and idealistic, happy to live in the moment and more likely to forget the past than mope about it. Having lived all his life in a comfortable, quiet suburb, Joey's a bit naive, but erratically enthusiastic about what he chooses to do with his life, often throwing his whole heart into projects he doesn't have the focus to finish. He likes to be outside and in motion, even when he's not running or kicking a ball around - he jiggles a knee when he has to be still and has been known to cut himself off in conversations he has lost the attention to finish. He's smart and capable, but doesn't think so, and can get competitive in his insecurity despite his inability to put a lot of work or time into any single interest. His likes and dislikes have changed a lot as he's grown, and so have his opinions, but his live-for-the-moment outlook on life stays the same.
He answers to his nickname Joey and never 'Joseph'. Spending most of his free time surrounded by friends, he has a fear of being alone and doesn't have to be the center of attention as long as he's with people he likes. He has always loved people and possessed an earnest desire to help others out, but in his carelessness and short attention span he often forgets about others and unintentionally hurts feelings. He doesn't mean to, though - Joey hates conflict and fights, and will do anything he can to stop them, often knowing just the right thing to say. He's good at being an unbiased judge of an argument or carefully assessing a fragile situation, because he wants to get things running smoothly again and to avoid prolonging a problem. He has never been one to hold a grudge.
Because he has played a lot of sports, joined a lot of clubs, and known many different people, Joey often finds himself a bit lost as to who he really is and what he plans to do after school. His friends don't notice, as he has the charisma and confidence to look like he knows exactly what he wants, but he's been searching for something that only he could be good at and that wouldn't be boring to him after a week or two. He's a man of many talents, this one - but sometimes, he doesn't want to be. He wants a best friend, and he wants to make a difference, instead of forever changing his mind - but he doesn't quite know how to start.
Joey likes running, ultimate frisbee, video games, and dogs - all dogs. He doesn't like writing or reading, or plane rides, road trips, and being alone. He's good at math and outdoor sports, as well as getting out of trouble, but has a tendency to be messy, careless, and forgetful. He likes life, and most people find themselves liking him.
History:
Joey grew up in a well-off, loving family, trying almost every sport his dad encouraged him to play and tormenting almost every teacher unlucky enough to have him in his or her class. From middle school his grades were unpredictable, soaring to straight A's one week and diving to F's the next, as he would often vow to do better and then quickly lose interest. He was involved with a lot of clubs in high school, and was never good enough to get into any varsity sports, but everyone knew him as the guy who was always up for an xbox marathon or a game of frisbee at the park. He had a lot of friends, not limiting himself to one or two best ones, and got along well with girls, though he never met one smart enough to hold his attention. His sister was equally popular among their peers, and they were often seen in the same group of kids.
Joey's troublemaking got worse in his first year of high school as he responded badly to the heavier workload, stricter teachers, and clique-ish upperclassmen. It started out small, with intricately designed and subtly offensive messages drawn in colored chalk on blackboards; it progressed to filling the dean's office with eggs so that no square inch of the carpeted floor was left uncovered. Joey finally crossed the line when he and a couple of 11th-grade friends decided to reenact a memorable scene from the movie Grease, and mooned the official school video camera that had come to take shots of that year's junior prom. Joey finished his sophomore year of high school on probation, with a strict warning that any more of his pranks would result in suspension.
Horseback riding was probably the only sport that could keep Joey listening to a teacher for more than 20 minutes without him mouthing off. He was fairly good at it and had continued on and off for a couple of years so that he could jump low fences, liking the adrenaline rush. When his family relocated, his parents made sure he would be greatly involved in Riverglass Ranch, knowing the havoc he'd wreak if he was left bored in a town where no one knew his name. They don't want him to get a horse yet, because they know his affinity for losing interest in a hobby, but so far Joey has appeared interested in the ranch, which has far better facilities than the place he rode at back home.
